Sowing Seeds of Growth: Celebrating the Heart of the Jacksonville
Community Center

by Hannah Washington, Communications, Data and Development Coordinator

This April the Great Room at the Jacksonville Community Center was buzzing with laughter, song, and a deep sense of gratitude. We gathered to celebrate our most precious resource: our volunteers.

Our theme for this year’s celebration was simple yet profound: Sowing the Seeds to Help Us Grow. In the life of a community center, the facility is just the structure—it is our volunteers who provide the water, the sunlight, and the nutrients that allow us to flourish.

The Power of Connection
The event was a beautiful reflection of the diverse community we serve. We recognized our founding members, whose vision created this space, alongside our past and current board members, whose dedication keeps our doors open for the future.

The atmosphere was electric. We enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared with care by JCC staff, played a spirited game of JCC Bingo, and even held a raffle that included a much-coveted free piano tuning!

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly when our Executive Director, Julie Raefield, led the room in a heartfelt rendition in song of “What the World Needs Now, is Love, Sweet Love.” Hearing that chorus of voices reminded us exactly why we are here: to connect, to learn, and to love.

Growing Together
The “seeds” our volunteers sow take many forms. Some offer their financial support to ensure our facility is safe and accessible. Some offer their sweat equity in our beautiful front garden. Others share their expertise, hosting presentations that enlighten and educate our neighbors. These contributions turn into tangible impacts:
● For our Elders: Providing a consistent space for social connection, lifelong learning and healthy activity;

● For our Adults: Providing a “third space” beyond work and home to learn, grow and build friendships;

● For our Youth: Creating an enriching environment where babies and toddlers enjoy music with Ms. Laurie, and elementary students explore their potential
through cooking, science, arts & crafts, and theater classes—all coordinated by our incredible Youth Program Coordinator, Sarah Greco.

A Huge Thank You
This celebration was a labor of love, brought to life by our Volunteer and Facility Coordinator, Tori Wood. We also sent our volunteers home with a small token of our appreciation: mini pots they painted themselves to take home and plant their own spring wildflowers, a physical reminder that when we nurture our community, we all grow together.
