Project Youth+ Increasing Opportunities for Southern Oregon Youth
Author: Mary Lynne DeRocher, Development Director & Carl Thomas, Executive Director
Project Youth+ is a Southern Oregon nonprofit dedicated to increasing opportunities for young people to thrive in school, careers, and life. For more than three decades, we have partnered with schools, families, employers, and community organizations to help youth overcome barriers and build strong futures.
Founded as College Dreams, Project Youth+ originally focused on helping students navigate the path to college. As community needs evolved, so did our work. Today, we serve youth across Josephine, Jackson, and southern Douglas Counties with comprehensive programs that support education, career readiness, financial capability, and personal development.
We work with middle school students, high school students, and young adults ages 14 through 24 who face obstacles to success. Many of the youth we support come from low income households, are the first in their families to pursue higher education, or lack consistent adult guidance. Our approach is individualized and relationship driven, meeting young people where they are and helping them move forward with confidence.
Project Youth+ delivers services through four core programs. +Accounts helps youth build financial capability through matched savings accounts that can be used for education, training, transportation, or other essential assets. Career Build connects participants to paid work experiences, career exploration, and workforce skills that prepare them for employment. College+ provides academic planning, college exploration, financial aid guidance, and long term advising to support successful transitions after high school. Whatever It Takes offers intensive school based advising for students who need additional support to stay engaged and graduate, working closely with families and educators to address barriers.
The need for these services continues to grow. Many Southern Oregon youth face significant challenges related to poverty, housing instability, mental health concerns, and limited access to education or employment opportunities. Without consistent support, these obstacles can lead to disengagement from school and fewer options for the future. Project Youth+ responds by providing trusted relationships, practical assistance, and clear pathways toward education and careers.
Last academic school year, Project Youth+ served more than 2,000 youth across the region. Participants stayed in school, earned diplomas and credentials, gained meaningful work experience, and developed the skills needed for long term stability. Our work is grounded in strong partnerships, measurable outcomes, and a deep commitment to ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to succeed.
