MAKING INDEPENDENCE POSSIBLE
By: Sara Ifert, Vice President, DBL Marketing
Many don’t realize that Southern Oregon is a nationwide hub of training and placement for Service Dogs. Since 1977, Dogs for Better Lives (DBL) has trained and placed Service Dogs with people with disabilities all across the United States from its campus in Central Point. As a nonprofit organization, our mission is to empower individuals and enhance independence by placing Service Dogs at zero cost to the clients we serve.
As a Facility Dog trained by Dogs for Better Lives, Tulip brings her expert skills and calm demeanor to Darci’s work at Grants Pass School District, where together they help students on the autism spectrum navigate their challenges and shine. “I’ve noticed that Tulip’s presence facilitates new social connections,” Darci explained. “My students feel pride and ownership over Tulip and enjoy sharing information about her with their peers.” Tulip brings a calming presence to students and staff alike.
Our West Campus is where the magic begins. Here, dogs receive specialized training tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals living with hearing loss, autism, or professionals working with vulnerable populations.
Our dogs are remarkable, some coming from our breeding program and others from our shelter partners. Each dog is carefully evaluated and expertly trained to support their future client. DBL has a lifetime commitment to all dogs in our care. That means no matter what happens, we put their wellbeing (physical, emotional and mental) at the root of all decisions.
Volunteers play a pivotal role in making our work possible. From raising puppies who will grow to become Service Dogs to assisting with events, there are numerous ways to get involved.
DBL Puppy Raiser Tammy shared, “My friends really like that I raise puppies because it means that they get to love on the cute puppies. Everyone thinks that it must be so hard to give them back, but it’s not. I know that sounds like I haven’t been totally in love with each puppy that I have raised, which isn’t true. You raise a puppy knowing they will leave someday and that when they do – they are going to have a wonderful life and make someone else’s life so much better.”
Dogs for Better Lives relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers. Whether you’re a dog lover or simply someone passionate about making a difference, there’s a place for you at DBL.
