BASE – Black Alliance and Social Empowerment

BASE: Building Belonging, Leadership, and Opportunity in Southern Oregon

By: Vance Beach, Founder and Executive Director

BASE (Black Alliance & Social Empowerment) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving Southern Oregon. Our mission is simple and urgent: help Black youth and families thrive by building belonging, leadership, and opportunity in places where those things can be hard to find.

Southern Oregon is beautiful and for many Black families, it can also feel isolating. When youth don’t see themselves reflected in their schools, neighborhoods, and community spaces, it impacts confidence, mental wellness, and identity development. BASE exists to change that reality. We create culturally grounded spaces where youth feel seen, supported, and celebrated not as an afterthought, but as leaders.

At the heart of our work is mentorship and leadership development. We run youth programming that blends community, culture, and fun with real-life skill building: teamwork, communication, accountability, and confidence. Our Youth Leadership Accelerator gives young people meaningful roles not “busy work,” but leadership opportunities where they learn to facilitate, plan, speak, support younger youth, and represent their community with pride. We believe young people don’t rise to the level of our expectations, they rise to the level of our belief in them.

We also create experiences that expand what youth can imagine for their future. That includes educational field trips and cultural experiences that expose youth to career pathways, higher education, arts, history, and civic engagement. One of our most powerful approaches is pairing inspiration with access: it’s not enough to tell youth they can be great, we build the environments and relationships that help them practice greatness.

BASE’s work is not only for youth. We support families, too, because when caregivers have community, children do better. Our gatherings create a network of support, connection, and joy that strengthens the entire region. And through arts and culture, we help our community tell the truth about history while also celebrating resilience, creativity, and contribution.

The issues we face are real: limited culturally specific resources, barriers to access, and the quiet impacts of isolation and systemic inequity. But the solution is also real: community care, committed partnership, and consistent investment in young people.

If you’re a Rogue Valley resident who wants to help, there are many ways to get involved: volunteer, sponsor a youth experience, share opportunities, attend community events, or simply help spread the word so families who need BASE can find us.

Because a thriving community isn’t just where people live — it’s where it feels good to be home.
