Jerry Pendzick
The Jacksonville Community Center is pleased to recognize Jerry Pendzick, a valued supporter and volunteer. Driving a New York City cab evolved into his initial career as a US Marine Corps captain and pilot, followed by a second 39-year career with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Now in retirement he is a self-taught chef, woodworker extraordinaire, and all-around dedicated volunteer.
Jerry was born and grew up in Queens, New York and graduated from NYU with a political science degree. He later pursued a MA in public administration from Central Michigan University. Interested in “seeing the world”, Jerry joined the Marines in 1973. His military duties took him to Hawaii, California, South Carolina and Japan where he met and married his lovely wife, Val. After leaving the Marines, Jerry and Val found themselves back in New York when Jerry began work at the FAA and then back to California where he worked as a flight inspector in Long Beach. Another move to San Diego finally allowed for a permanent home base until retirement and relocation to Jacksonville.
Volunteering should be Jerry’s middle name. He has lent his time and talent for several JCC activities. Program participants have enjoyed his classes on knife sharpening, furniture refinishing, and culinary demonstrations. Jerry also volunteered at last summer’s Kids Camp and taught the campers how to make a wood craft project. He brings enthusiasm and a great sense of humor to all programs, which has made him a very sought-after instructor.
Beyond his work with the JCC, you can find Jerry assisting the homeless at the St. Vincent de Paul Society Urban Rest Stop. He is a member of the Siskiyou Mountain Club, the Siskiyou Woodworkers group in Ashland and a member and exhibitor at the Art Presence gallery. Recent membership in the Jacksonville Booster Club rounds out Jerry’s many volunteer roles.
Like so many others, Jerry says he has found his niche living in Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Community Center is the grateful beneficiary of Jerry’s involvement!
