SUMMARY:Talk: The 7\,000 Mile Lifelong Triathlon with YMCA Director Brad Russell
DESCRIPTION:Join Brad Russell\, YMCA Executive Director\, as he shares his story of biking 3\,300 miles from Maine to California in his 20s\, hiking 2\,700 miles from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail in is 30s\, and recently completing 1\,200 miles paddling his kayak in sections from Washington to Alaska along the Inside Passage.  Bike\, Hike\, Paddle with a few insights of working at a YMCA in Taiwan where he met his wife of 28 years and now speaks Mandarin Chinese.  Not only does he tell of the highs and lows of his triathlon journey but also shares life lessons.  Lessons include: mother knows best\, do your research\, relationships matter most\, build strength & resilience\, keep at it\, be flexible & adjust\, and be kind to yourself & others. \nPresenter Bio: Brad Russell has been the Executive Director of the Rogue Valley Family YMCA in Medford\, Oregon since 2006.  He has a Business Administration degree from the University of Maine and a Masters degree in Recreation Administration and Nonprofit Management from Springfield College in Massachusetts. He began his YMCA career in 1990 in Rochester\, New York then served in San Diego\, California.  He spent a year at a YMCA in Taiwan where he met his wife\, Stella\, then led two YMCAs in Monterey County\, California.  Brad volunteers for the Nonprofit Association of Oregon and serves on the board of La Clinica Health Center. As an avid traveler\, he has visited NGOs in more than 35 countries\, speaks Mandarin Chinese and a bit of Spanish.  In his free time\, he enjoys sea kayaking and time outdoors with his wife and two rescued dogs.

DESCRIPTION:Join Lori Grable for a Beginning Yoga class! This class is open to anyone who is interested in trying out yoga for the first time or wants a refresher yoga class after a layoff. Come with comfortable clothes\, a yoga mat and water bottle. For a special AUGUST treat\, yoga student\, Linda Kilcollins who is certified in sound therapy\, will play the bowls during Savasana\, \nNew students can arrive at 10:15. \nLori began her yoga journey in 2000 as a student at the Santa Barbara Yoga Center. She was drawn to the practice because it helped her to reconnect with her most authentic self while making her stronger and more open\, physically and mentally. Her passion for yoga grew stronger as she traveled around the United States during the summer of 2003\, practicing at many studios along the way. After settling in Pittsburgh\, PA\, she completed her teacher training and began teaching in 2006. \nToday\, Lori is an E-RYT 500 and teaches Vinyasa-based classes. She is influenced by the philosophy and alignment principles of Anusara Yoga. As a triathlete\, Lori has an interest in yoga for athletes and has taught many workshops on the topic. She has a passion for the outdoors and has taught yoga in parks\, vineyards\, and backyards. Lori appreciates the healing and restorative qualities of yoga and has also worked with students who are recovering from illness\, rehabilitating injuries\, pregnant\, or elderly.

DESCRIPTION:Out in the Valley: Southern Oregon LGBTQ+ Histories  \n\nUsing historical objects\, documents\, and photographs from the SOHS Collection as “breadcrumbs”\, Dr. Anna Sloan will explore expressions of LGBTQ+ life\, identity\, community\, and resilience in Southern Oregon over the past 150+ years. Learn how the western frontier made space for some settlers’ alternative gender and sexual identities\, while simultaneously erasing Indigenous expressions of the same. Explore how changing social mores of the early 20th century affected peoples’ lives and livelihoods. Hear more recent stories of local LGBTQ+ community-building\, meaning-making\, artistry\, and resilience\, even in the face of discrimination and violence. Sloan will also share the latest updates from SOHS on efforts to integrate more of these stories into the permanent collection — and why this task is as challenging as it is important.\n\n\n \nPresenter Bio: Anna Sloan\, PhD (she/her/hers) is the Curator of Collections for the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS)\, and a Research Archaeologist with the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology (SOULA). She received her PhD in Anthropology (Archaeology) and a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from the University of Oregon in 2021. Histories of gender\, sexuality\, and social identity were the focus of her academic studies\, and Anna is excited to bring this research focus to her work in southern Oregon. Anna’s favorite part of her job is connecting communities with their histories through the objects that reflect their lived experiences — from the smallest of pottery sherds\, to the largest of wagon wheels. She lives in Ashland with her family and a growing menagerie of four-legged friends.

DESCRIPTION:Join Lori Grable for a Beginning Yoga class! This class is open to anyone who is interested in trying out yoga for the first time or wants a refresher yoga class after a layoff. Come with comfortable clothes\, a yoga mat and water bottle. For a special AUGUST treat\, yoga student\, Linda Kilcollins who is certified in sound therapy\, will play the bowls during Savasana\, \nNew students can arrive at 10:15. \nLori began her yoga journey in 2000 as a student at the Santa Barbara Yoga Center. She was drawn to the practice because it helped her to reconnect with her most authentic self while making her stronger and more open\, physically and mentally. Her passion for yoga grew stronger as she traveled around the United States during the summer of 2003\, practicing at many studios along the way. After settling in Pittsburgh\, PA\, she completed her teacher training and began teaching in 2006. \nToday\, Lori is an E-RYT 500 and teaches Vinyasa-based classes. She is influenced by the philosophy and alignment principles of Anusara Yoga. As a triathlete\, Lori has an interest in yoga for athletes and has taught many workshops on the topic. She has a passion for the outdoors and has taught yoga in parks\, vineyards\, and backyards. Lori appreciates the healing and restorative qualities of yoga and has also worked with students who are recovering from illness\, rehabilitating injuries\, pregnant\, or elderly.
